I think the usage of the other way around is restricted to cases where there is a statement of the general form "X (has some relationship to) Y"; when you say "no, it's the other way around" you are asserting that in fact the statement should be "Y (has some relationship to) X."
X, Yふたつが関係する時、Xのことを言っていると思ったらYだった、という場合は、the other way aroundが使えるという回答。
例1:
We went to the store and then the movie. Wait, it was the other way around; we went to the movie and then the store.
例2:
Did the first chicken create the first egg, or was it the other way around?
